Australian cricket star Marnus Labuschagne is making a fresh start in his game ahead of the highly anticipated Ashes series. The top-order batter recently revealed that he has stopped obsessing over perfecting his batting technique to help boost his chances of returning to the Australian Test team.
Labuschagne was dropped from Australia’s squad for the West Indies tour in June after struggling to score runs as an opening batter. His poor performance in the World Test Championship final, where he scored only one century in 53 innings across 58 Tests, led to his absence from the team.
Now, he’s taking a different approach. He said, “My technique hasn’t been where I wanted it to be, and I was focusing too much on fixing that instead of just playing my natural game. So, I’ve taken some time to reset and recalibrate. My goal is to get ready for the Ashes starting November 21 in Perth.”
Labuschagne added that he’s worked on making some technical adjustments over the past three months and feels confident about his game. He also reflected on his past success, saying, “Two years ago, I was one of the best batters in the world. I know I’ve got that level inside me; now it’s about finding consistency and mental clarity again.”
If he makes it back into the Australian Test team, Labuschagne may return to his usual number three batting position, especially if Cameron Green shifts down the order. He also spoke about his smarter training approach. Instead of just grinding in the nets without a plan, he now trains more intelligently, focusing on quality and purpose.
“I stepped back mentally to see what I want to achieve. Instead of blindly training hard, I work with my coaches and team to develop a clear plan. Confidence is key — I want to score runs consistently and get that feel of being in top form. When you do that, everything else falls into place pretty quickly,” he explained.
Labuschagne’s journey shows he’s determined to come back stronger for Australia’s biggest cricket showdown – the Ashes. Fans will be eager to see his renewed focus and improved game on display in Perth this November.
