Bangladesh cricket star Litton Das has just claimed the top spot as his team’s leading T20I run-scorer, edging out the legendary Shakib Al Hasan during the Super Four Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in Dubai.
Litton reached this milestone with a brisk 23 runs off 16 balls, including three boundaries, at a strike rate of 143.75. In his 114 T20I appearances and 112 innings, he now boasts 2,556 runs at an average of 23.88 and a strike rate of 126.59. That’s 15 half-centuries to his credit, with a highest score of 83. Shakib, meanwhile, drops to second place with 2,551 runs from 129 matches and 127 innings, averaging 23.19 at a strike rate of 121.18, including 13 fifties and a best of 84.
For context, India’s former T20I captain and World Cup winner Rohit Sharma holds the overall T20I run-scoring record with an impressive 4,231 runs in 159 innings. He averages 32.05 with a strike rate of 140.89, featuring five centuries, 32 half-centuries, and a top score of 121 not out. Litton ranks 19th on the all-time T20I list.
In the game itself, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka got off to a solid start with a 44-run opening stand, led by Pathum Nissanka’s 22 off 15 balls (three fours and a six). Kusal Mendis added 34 off 25 (one four and three sixes), but the innings hit a snag at 97/4 after 13.4 overs, with Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Perera dismissed. Captain Dasun Shanaka then steadied the ship alongside Charith Asalanka (21 off 12, with a four and a six), helping Sri Lanka reach 168/7 in 20 overs.
Bangladesh’s bowlers shone, with Mustafizur Rahman grabbing 3/20 in four overs, Mahedi Hasan taking two wickets, and Taskin Ahmed claiming one.
Chasing the target, Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan early, but Litton and Saif Hassan built a crucial 59-run partnership to steady things. Saif then anchored with a 54-run stand for the third wicket alongside Towhid Hridoy, who smashed 58 off 37 balls (four fours and two sixes). Saif top-scored with 61 off 45 (two fours and four sixes). A late wobble saw Bangladesh slip from 159/3 to 168/6 in 19.4 overs, but Shamim Hossain (14 not out) and Nasum Ahmed (1 not out) guided them home with four wickets in hand and one ball to spare.
