New Delhi, Nov 9 – BCCI president Mithun Manhas praised former board secretary and current ICC chair Jay Shah for elevating Indian women’s cricket to world‑class status. The president said Shah’s work helped the team win the 2025 ODI World Cup, a historic first ICC trophy for India.
The Indian squad, led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, beat South Africa by 52 runs in the final. This win capped decades of effort and put India’s women on the global stage as champions.
Manhas told that the foundations for this success were laid almost twenty years ago, around 2006‑2007, when the BCCI took responsibility for the women’s game. “Jay Shah played a major role early on,” he said. “He pushed for equal pay so women cricketers earned the same as their male counterparts.”
The BCCI later launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL), and a few years ago, it introduced an Under‑15 women’s tournament. Manhas praised Shah’s initiatives, noting that he raised salaries and prize money even while serving at the ICC. “His work earned him much credit,” he added.
Manhas also highlighted the contributions of former Indian players who helped shape the team. “These ex‑players have been working behind the scenes for years,” he said. “Their invaluable support made this victory possible.”
The World Cup win has given a huge boost to women’s cricket at every level in India. “We hope girls will pick up the bat in the streets just like boys used to play,” Manhas said. “With this momentum, India can win many more trophies in the future.”
