Rahmanullah Lakanwal, suspect in deadly National Guard shooting, expected to survive — setting up blockbuster DC criminal trial

The suspect who opened fire on two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., is slated to recover from his injuries and will face criminal proceedings in the capital. A law‑enforcement official told The Post, “I think the guy’s going to live. Nobody’s going to be able to say anything and he’s going to stand trial,” noting that the accused, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, had surgery the night of the attack. Prosecutors will need to keep certain facts under wraps until the trial.

Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed the day after the ambush. A spokesperson for Joint Task Force — DC said there were no new updates on the second guard, Andrew Wolfe, who is still in critical condition. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that the government will file first‑degree murder charges against Lakanwal. “There are certainly many more charges to come, but we are upgrading the initial charges of assault to murder in the first degree,” she said following Beckstrom’s death.
