New Delhi, Nov 13 – Ahead of India’s opening Test against South Africa, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal praised captain Shubman Gill, calling him a “great player of this generation” and a “pleasant teammate.” Jaiswal spoke on JioStar before the first match starts at Kingspore’s Eden Gardens on Friday.
Gill led India to a 2‑0 win in the home series against West India. He is now heading into the high‑stakes Test versus the Proteas after a busy white‑ball tour in Australia.
### Jaiswal on Shubman Gill
“I share great camaraderie with Shubman,” Jaiswal said. “He’s a gentleman, a great friend, and batting with him is always enjoyable. He’s one of the best players of our generation.”
The 23‑year‑old said he looks forward to playing under Gill’s leadership and feels honoured to share the crease with a top‑order hero.
### Roaring Influences
When asked about senior veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Jaiswal was quick to credit their impact on his game. “What Rohit Bhaiya and Bhai have done is incredible,” he added. “They inspire a whole generation, including me.”
Jaiswal reflected that stepping onto the crease for a Test is a learning chance. “I can’t fill their shoes,” he said, “but I’ll play with confidence and use my strengths.”
### Recent Form
Jaiswal’s form has been strong. In Mumbai’s recent Ranji Trophy tie‑game against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, he scored 67 and 156, and returned figures of 1‑9 from his part‑time leg‑spin. “I’m happy with my recent performances,” he said. “I focus on what I do in the middle and how I can help the team rather than on averages or stats.”
He praised his preparation: “Practice keeps me grounded and confident. I play each match as it comes and give my best for the team.”
### Eye on the Top
With the first Test against South Africa drawing near, Jaiswal aims for a top‑order spot and a solid start. The match at Eden Gardens will test India’s new spinners and top‑order resilience.
The series is a chance for young players to prove themselves and for India to push toward series victory. The team, led by Gill, will look to keep the momentum from the West Indies win and tackle the challenging Proteas in Mumbai’s cricket‑loving nest.
