The Punjab state’s governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, said the death of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar—reported as a suicide—was a “serious matter.” He added that police had filed a First Information Report (FIR) because of the case’s gravity.
Kumar, who allegedly took his own life on Oct. 7 in his Chandigarh home, left a note naming eight senior Haryana police officers, including Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur and Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya. The note accused them of caste‑based discrimination, harassment, public humiliation and other abuses that drove him to despair.
The governor noted that 14‑15 officers are now under investigation, and the Haryana government has already transferred the SP as a preliminary step. “Before any arrest at the DGP level we must verify all facts,” Kataria told .
The Chandigarh Police have set up a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the allegations and ensure an unbiased probe. This move follows pressure from Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, who demands an FIR be filed against the DGP and SP for alleged harassment and discrimination.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, after visiting Kumar’s home and meeting his family, urged the Haryana government and the central authorities to support the bereaved. “The family demands justice. No one is above the law,” Mann said to reporters. “We must stand with them and deliver fairness.”
The incident has sparked public anger and call for accountability. The police administration is working to calm tensions while the SIT gathers evidence. As the investigation unfolds, both state governments face scrutiny over how they handled the officer’s death and the claims of systemic abuse.
