In a nail-biting Premier League clash at Brentford, Chelsea’s hopes of grabbing a dramatic comeback win slipped away in stoppage time. The Blues fought back twice but ended up with a 2-2 draw after substitute Fabio Carvalho smashed home an equalizer right at the death.
Chelsea thought they had it in the bag when Moises Caicedo unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the box in the 85th minute, putting them on course to top the Premier League table by Saturday night. Earlier, Cole Palmer, fresh from injury, had leveled things up just past the hour mark with a cool finish—his first open-play goal since January and his first strike overall since a penalty against Liverpool back in May. That goal wiped out Kevin Schade’s opener for Brentford in the 35th minute.
But Brentford weren’t done fighting. In the third minute of added time, Carvalho bundled the ball over the line from a long throw-in, rescuing a point for the hosts and turning the match on its head.
The result leaves Chelsea in fifth place, missing out on the top spot, while Brentford climb to 12th with four points from their four games this season.
Brentford boss Keith Andrews was buzzing about his team’s grit. “I’m delighted with the group’s approach and the character we keep showing,” he said. “That equalizer came super late, but it felt like what we deserved—great application and quality from the players for most of the game. Sure, they had their moments on top, but we handled a lot of it really well.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was gutted about the late twist. “It’s a shame to concede so late, but it happens,” he admitted. “We probably could have managed that moment better and lost two points because of it. We always aim to win every game, but we know we won’t. Still, it’s tough when it comes this late.”
Up next for Chelsea, they’ll park Premier League drama for a bit as their UEFA Champions League adventure kicks off with a huge away clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Then, it’s back to domestic action with a tough trip to Manchester United next Saturday—another Premier League showdown not to miss.
