NET and MMTTC centres emerging as powerful instruments: Rajasthan MP

On December 11, during a Rajya Sabha debate, BJP MP Madan Rathore from Rajasthan asked pointed questions about the state of higher education, teacher training, and the knowledge‑development plan behind “New India”. He wanted a clear picture of how the Multimodal Teacher Training Centres (MMTTCs) set up nationwide are boosting teacher competence, and what special supports are in place for students from socio‑economically challenged backgrounds.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, State Minister Sukanta Majumdar noted that the relaunch of the MMTTP scheme on 5 September 2023 had led to the creation and accreditation of 151 MMTTC centres across India. These hubs provide contemporary, multidisciplinary training that is open to all higher‑education faculty, aligning perfectly with the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on high‑quality teacher preparation.

Majumdar added that the program now covers essential themes such as Indian knowledge systems, mental‑health and well‑being, empowerment of disadvantaged groups, entrepreneurship, design thinking, STEM, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and leadership development. Through these extensive modules, the government aims to elevate Indian higher‑education instructors to international standards. Since the scheme’s relaunch, more than 322 000 teachers have been trained—a historic milestone for the country’s academia.

Mr Rathore praised these results, saying, “Empowered teachers build a strong India, and the Modi government is doing unprecedented work in this direction.” He went on to argue that education reforms are not just administrative initiatives but the foundation of nation‑building. He lauded the government’s emphasis on teacher training, indigenous knowledge, cutting‑edge skills, and mental‑health support, noting that higher‑education institutions are swiftly moving toward global excellence. Finally, he remarked, “The scale at which the Modi government has accelerated education reforms is truly unprecedented and highly commendable for the future generations of the country.”
