Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar is set to boost Surrey’s spin attack in the County Championship. The 26-year-old joins the squad for their final match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl.
Chahar registered with Surrey earlier this month but sat out their recent home games at Kia Oval against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. Now, he steps up for this season-ending clash. Hampshire, meanwhile, just added Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar to their lineup for the closing fixtures.
A key player for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy, Chahar has earned seven caps for India in white-ball cricket. In first-class cricket, he boasts 87 wickets across 24 matches, averaging 26.12, with his best haul of 9/148. His T20 skills shine in the IPL too—he started with Rising Pune Supergiant, then starred for Mumbai Indians in their 2019 and 2020 title wins. After stints with Punjab Kings, he now plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2024.
“I’m excited to join Surrey for this week’s match,” Chahar said. “I’m here to make an impact and help the team in their final game of the season.”
Surrey needs this reinforcement badly. Injuries have sidelined spinner Will Jacks and Cam Steel. Director of Cricket Alec Stewart praised the move: “Adding Rahul gives us another spin option at the Utilita Bowl. We knew we’d miss players at the end of the season and planned for the pitches and opponents.”
Stewart noted a change in plans. “We originally lined up Sai Kishore for the later stages, but a finger injury forced him into surgery, so he’s out.” With Chahar in, Surrey aims to end strong in the County Championship.
