New Delhi, Dec. 27 – India’s electronics industry has seen a massive boom, now being the world’s second‑largest mobile‑phone assembly hub, said Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Saturday.
In a series of tweets on X, Vaishnaw outlined how the country’s electronic exports have grown eight times higher in the last 11 years, largely thanks to the Production‑Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The PLI for large‑scale electronics manufacturing has lured more than ₹13,475 crore in investment and helped produce roughly ₹9.8 lakh crore in output, boosting jobs and exports, the minister said.
He highlighted that the policy has created “over 1.3 lakh jobs in the last five years” and has pushed electronics into India’s third‑largest export ranking, jumping from seventh place.
While India initially focused on finished products, the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has encouraged a shift toward making modules, components, sub‑modules, raw materials, and the machines that produce them. The scheme has received 249 applications, corresponding to ₹1.15 lakh crore in investment, ₹10.34 lakh crore in output and 1.42 lakh jobs, according to the post. Vaishnaw noted that this marks the highest-ever investment commitment in the sector, signalling growing confidence among industry players.
The minister also touched on progress in semiconductors, announcing that ten new fabs have been approved, three of which are already in pilot or early production. “Fabs and ATPMs from India will soon supply chips to phone and electronics manufacturers,” he added.
“Electronics manufacturing created 25 lakh jobs in the last decade. This is the real economic growth at the grassroots level,” Vaishnaw emphasized. He added that as semiconductor and component manufacturing scale up, job creation will accelerate, and that the continued rise in exports and industry confidence embodies the ‘Make in India’ success story.
