Himachal Pradesh CM Praises Women’s Role in Society at Shimla Event
In a heartwarming address in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the vital contributions of women to society’s growth. Speaking at the "Nari Tu Narayani" programme organized by local daily Himachal Dastak on Monday, he celebrated how women are reaching new heights in every sphere of life.
The CM shared his joy over the event, which honors women’s remarkable achievements across various fields. He recalled a time when women were mostly limited to household tasks, with little focus on girls’ education and restrictions on working outside the home. For years, half the population missed out on intellectual and economic opportunities, but things have changed for the better.
Today, Sukhu said, women inspire everyone with their dedication, hard work, and skills, carving out unique identities in society. He proudly noted that his government has rolled out several schemes to empower women in Himachal Pradesh. One key initiative is the Mukya Mantri Vidhwa evam Ekal Nari Awaas Yojna, offering Rs 3 lakh to economically weaker widows and single women for building homes. The government also boosted incentives under the widow remarriage scheme from Rs 65,000 to Rs 2 lakh.
Sukhu credited former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for introducing 33% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions, which has boosted their role in grassroots development. He pointed out that the MLA from the vast Lahaul-Spiti district is a woman, and key administrative posts there are held by women too— a clear sign of the current government’s respect for women’s leadership.
At the event, the Chief Minister announced Rs 51,000 for each honored woman. He distributed awards to the "Narayanis of Season 4" for their outstanding work in different areas, along with the Engineering Icon of Himachal and Civil Excellence Award 2025 to engineers from various departments.
Sukhu also released a Green Himachal-themed souvenir by Himachal Dastak. The programme saw attendance from Education Minister Rohit Thakur, Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, MLAs Sudarshan Bablu and Anuradha Rana, and other officials like Chief Minister’s advisors Naresh Chauhan and Gokul Butail, Secretary Rakesh Kanwar, and Himachal Dastak’s Chairman K D Sridhar, Editor Hemant Kumar, Bureau Chief Mast Ram Dalel, and Director of Information and Public Relations Rajiv Kumar.
This event underscores Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality, inspiring many across India.
