Sao Paulo, Nov 24 – After the G20 talks in Johannesburg, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he was “very concerned” about the recent surge of U.S. forces in the Caribbean Sea and planned to call Donald Trump to try to avoid a flare‑up with Venezuela. He emphasized that South America is a “zone of peace,” free of nuclear weapons, and that “there is nothing to justify a conflict.” “War makes no sense,” Lula added. “It’s simple to start a war; you just have to give them an opportunity … It is important that we try to find a solution before we start.”
Brazil has a key role in the region, especially as it borders Venezuela. The United States has “beefed up” its military presence in the Caribbean after Washington moved to clamp down on drug trafficking that, according to Xinhua news agency, is linked to the deaths of millions of Americans.
Lula also stressed that Jair Bolsonaro’s arrest should not disturb the relationship between Brazil and the U.S., underscoring that Brazil is a sovereign nation. Bolsonaro was placed in preventive custody by police on Saturday morning in Brasília under a writ issued by the Federal Supreme Court. Referring to Trump’s remark on Bolsonaro’s detention, Lula told the President that “Trump needs to know that we are a sovereign country and that our justice system decides.” Bolsonaro will serve the sentence imposed by the courts for his actions.
U.S. media reports suggest that when Trump was asked about Bolsonaro’s arrest on Saturday, he seemed unaware of the details before describing the situation as “too bad.” In September, Bolsonaro received a 27‑year, three‑month prison term for his involvement in an attempted coup aimed at remaining in power after his electoral defeat.
