Alaska Airlines incident fuels “Two Cats Karen” controversy
A video that has already earned hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok shows Alexandra Compton, a frequent traveler who has taken her pets on many flights, becoming upset in Las Vegas’ United Airlines terminal when Alaska Airlines staff informed her that she could not put both of her cats in the same carrier.
Compton was heading home to Portland, Oregon, and the airline agent explained that the cats do not have sufficient space for full range of motion in a single carrier, a requirement that goes beyond weight limits. The employee told her that if the animals “couldn’t get in or out easily, they would need separate containers,” a policy that allows up to two pets of the same species and similar size in one carrier, provided no body parts protrude and the pets are not in distress.
The passenger’s reaction was heated. She shouted, “Why are you ruining Christmas?!” and demanded, “Show me the policy, then, before I booked the flight, that said that I had to have a certain weight of cat to go under the seat!” She went on to say, “You haven’t even seen my cat, so you’re not letting me go home for Christmas!” and “You’re telling me I can’t go home for Christmas!” The TikTok video, titled “Two Cats Karen,” captured her frustration and later an airline worker asking her to lower her voice.
After the exchange, Compton eventually bought a second carrier and was re‑booked onto a later flight, traveling with both cats under separate seats. She posted the experience on Facebook, complaining, “They made me leave the airport, buy a second pet carrier, a second seat to put the second cat under on a whole new flight 3 hours later,” and added, “F—k Alaska Airlines, their ‘policies’ and lack of customer service. I hope you all get coal for Christmas.”
At the time of writing, Alaska Airlines had not responded to a request for comment. The incident highlights the often‑confusing regulations surrounding pet travel and the challenges passengers face when trying to bring multiple animals aboard the same flight.
