Veteran Indian cricketer Amit Mishra has officially announced his retirement from professional cricket, ending an impressive career that lasted over 25 years. Mishra, renowned for his exceptional leg-spin bowling, leaves behind a rich legacy in Indian cricket.
During his international career, Mishra played in 22 Test matches, 36 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 10 T20 Internationals. He took a total of 76 wickets in Tests, 64 in ODIs, and 16 in T20Is, thanks to his clever variations and tight control on the ball. Mishra shared a heartfelt message, saying the decision was influenced by recurring injuries and his desire to give upcoming cricketers a chance to shine on the big stage.
He expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him along the way, including the BCCI, his team, family, and fans. “Cricket has given me unforgettable memories and countless lessons. I will cherish every moment I had on the ground,” he added.
Amit Mishra made his international debut in 2003 during an ODI in Bangladesh, but it was in 2008 that he played his first Test match against Australia in Mohali. He made an instant impact, claiming five wickets in his debut match. In 2013, Mishra equalled the world record for most wickets in a bilateral ODI series, taking 18 wickets in five games in Zimbabwe. He also featured in India’s 2014 T20 World Cup campaign in Bangladesh, where he took 10 wickets and helped India reach the finals.
Though his last match for India was in 2017, Mishra continued to shine in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His final IPL game was for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024, where he took 1 wicket for 20 runs against Rajasthan Royals.
Mishra’s domestic achievements are equally impressive. He is the seventh highest wicket-taker in IPL history, with 174 wickets in 162 matches at an average of 23.82. He is also the only bowler to have taken three IPL hat-tricks, achieved with three different teams: Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2008, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.
Looking ahead, Mishra plans to stay connected with cricket through coaching, commentary, and mentoring young players. He also aims to engage with fans via social media and YouTube, sharing his love for the game and inspiring fresh talent.
With a career full of memorable moments and record-breaking performances, Amit Mishra’s journey in cricket has truly been remarkable.
