Indian wrestlers face fresh scrutiny over weight management after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) slapped a show-cause notice on Paris Olympics bronze medalist Aman Sehrawat. The issue? He showed up overweight by 1.7 kilograms at the World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, knocking him out of the men’s 57kg freestyle competition where he was a top seed and strong medal hopeful.
The WFI didn’t stop there—they also sent notices to the support staff who helped Sehrawat during the event. “We issued the show-cause notice to Aman Sehrawat and his support team for the weight violation,” WFI president Sanjay Singh told reporters. “They have until September 29 to respond, and we’ll listen to their side before deciding on any action.”
Singh stressed the federation’s strict no-nonsense policy on weight rules, pointing out that wrestlers represent India and get major funding from the government. “We’ve suspended Neha Sangwan before for the same reason,” he said. “When the country invests crores in you, you need to get serious—or face the consequences.”
This isn’t an isolated slip-up. It’s the third time in a year that weight problems have sidelined an Indian wrestler at a key international meet. Remember Vinesh Phogat at the Paris Olympics? She got disqualified from the women’s 50kg final for being just over the limit, costing India a shot at gold. And last month, young talent Neha Sangwan missed her bout at the World Under-20 Championships in the 59kg category for similar reasons.
Looking ahead, the WFI kicks off under-23 trials on October 4 in Lucknow and Delhi. These one-day events will pick India’s team for the World Under-23 Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, running from October 20 to 26. With weight discipline in the spotlight, expect extra focus on keeping athletes on target.
