India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar joined EU Foreign Ministers for a key informal meeting in New York on Monday, hosted by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas. The gathering happened on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and brought in ministers from Brazil and Mexico too.
They tackled pressing global challenges head-on, like strengthening multilateralism, boosting the India-EU partnership, the ongoing Ukraine conflict, the dire situation in Gaza, energy security, and trade deals. Jaishankar shared his thoughts on X, saying he was “pleased to meet EU Foreign Ministers” and thanked Kallas for the invite. He called it a great chance for an “open exchange of views” on those hot topics.
EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin praised Jaishankar’s input, noting how much the group appreciated India’s perspectives on shared concerns. Delphin highlighted the meeting’s role in discussing issues that matter to everyone involved.
Kallas echoed the positive vibes in her own X post after the Foreign Affairs Council session. She stressed the EU’s role as a “reliable actor” that backs multilateralism, free trade, and a world built on the UN Charter. In follow-up remarks, she spotlighted partnerships with India, Brazil, and Mexico as vital for upholding the rules-based international order. Just last week, the EU rolled out a new blueprint to ramp up ties with India and Mexico, including updates to free trade agreements.
Turning to the Middle East, Kallas didn’t hold back on Gaza. She called the crisis a “devastating failure of humanity” and urged Israel to drop humanitarian aid restrictions right away. She slammed expanding settlements and land annexation as roadblocks to peace. On the other side, she insisted Hamas release all hostages and disarm, while pushing for EU efforts to ease the humanitarian mess and support a two-state solution—with a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.
On Russia’s war in Ukraine, Kallas blasted Moscow’s “absolute contempt for diplomacy” and its “reckless violations” of EU airspace. She warned that “prospects of peace recede with every Russian air strike.” The EU fired back with a fresh sanctions package announced last week.
Throughout the talks, everyone agreed on defending the multilateral order, with the UN Charter as its foundation. As Kallas put it, these relationships with Brazil, India, and Mexico aren’t just about economics—they’re key to safeguarding global stability.
