Women’s World Cup: Trying to expand my range and not to be one-dimension, says Brits

South Africa bounced back to claim their first win of the tournament when Tazmin Brits smashed a quick 101 runs at Holkar Stadium, handing New Zealand a six‑wicket defeat on Monday.

Brits’ century, packed with 15 fours and a six, helped the Proteas chase a target of 232 with 55 balls to spare. The unbeaten knock makes her only the fourth woman to score an ODI century in just five innings, and she now holds the record for the fewest starts to reach seven centuries—surpassing Australian great Meg Lanning.

“I’m not the record‑obsessed type, but when Meg Lanning is mentioned, I’m happy to be above her,” Brits said after being named Player of the Match. “As long as we win, that’s what matters.”

When asked about her breakthrough, the left‑hander pointed to the team’s recent batting camps. “Those sessions really helped me broaden my shot‑selection and become less one‑dimensional,” she said.

Brits explained that keeping a positive mood was key during the chase. “I kept telling myself to stay positive and that got me into the middle of the innings. It’s also fun—I used a new bat that day and it feels lucky.”

Following the win, South Africa looks forward to a showdown with host India in Visakhapatnam on Thursday, while New Zealand will face Bangladesh in Guwahati on Friday. The Proteas’ tough 10‑wicket loss to England in the opening match remains a distant memory as they rebuild momentum.
