World Boxing C’ship: Nupur confirms first medal for India

India’s Nupur Bedi shines bright at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, securing the country’s first medal with a thrilling quarterfinal win. The World Boxing Cup Astana gold medallist took down Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva 4:1 in the women’s 80+kg category on Wednesday. This victory punches her ticket to the semifinals, marking a huge moment for Indian boxing.

The match turned tactical right from the start, with both fighters picking up a point penalty for holding too much. Nupur kicked off strong in the first round, but Sotimboeva – a former World Youth silver medallist and Astana bronze winner – fought back hard in the second to narrow the gap. Nupur turned it around in the third round, ramping up her attacks and keeping her opponent on the defensive to seal the deal.

This comes hot on the heels of Tuesday’s action, where three more Indian boxers advanced to the quarterfinals, just one win away from guaranteeing medals. Meenakshi dominated China’s Wang Qiuping 5:0 in women’s 48kg, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam crushed England’s Reece Readshaw 5:0 in men’s 50kg, and Abhinash Jamwal smashed Dominican Republic’s Piter Ynoa Fernando de Jesus in men’s 65kg. Sadly, Jugnoo fell short in men’s 85kg, losing 0:5 to Scotland’s Robert William McNulty in the pre-quarterfinals.

India’s 20-member squad is making waves at this inaugural World Boxing Championships, organized by the new international body World Boxing. They’re eyeing strong performances in both men’s and women’s events. Excitement builds as four more Indians gear up for quarterfinal bouts later today: two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen in women’s 51kg, Jaismine Lamboria in women’s 57kg, Pooja Rani in women’s 80kg, and Abhinash Jamwal in men’s 65kg. Can they add more medals to the tally? Stay tuned for updates on Indian boxers at the World Boxing Championships!
