Denver dad fights off home invader attempting to get to his children’s bedroom: ‘Somebody’s in our house’

Kevin and Sarah Root told Fox News Digital that the night took an unimaginable turn in their southwest Denver home. At roughly 3:30 a.m. they heard a crunch of footsteps on the stairs. Kevin remembered, “Somebody’s in our house.”

The couple’s worst fears began to surface as a stranger crept toward the bedrooms where their four boys slept. While Sarah rushed to the phone to dial 911, Kevin checked the hallway, shouting at the intruder to leave.

The man continued toward the sleeping rooms, prompting Kevin to swing the door wide, leap out, and push the man down the stairs. Police arrived a few minutes later and took the suspect into custody. No one was physically hurt, but the emotional aftermath has been a slow process.

“We’re so thankful no one was hurt, including him,” Sarah said. The suspect, 36‑year‑old Charley Cooley, faces a felony second‑degree robbery charge and a second robbery arrest this year.

He was released on a $500 cash bond after a judge set a $5,000 property/surety condition. The family has struggled to regain a sense of safety, with Sarah noting that the fear of the unknown remains terrifying.

They were shocked to learn that Cooley had a prior robbery arrest in September and was released within days. The incident has rattled neighbors, prompting Denver police to remind residents to secure doors and windows and report suspicious activity.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office could not comment on the case, stating it was pending and records could not be released.
