ECI clarifies 3 lakh rise in Bihar voter count after Congress flags discrepancy

The Election Commission of India (ECI) clarified a voter‑roll puzzle that the Congress party raised yesterday. The party pointed out that chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said Bihar had 74.2 million voters in a press note on Oct. 6, but after the state’s elections the ECI announced 74.5 million voters – a jump of roughly 300,000 names.

ECI says the difference is simple and procedural. The 74.2 million figure was based on the version of the electoral roll that the commission published on Sept. 30, which is always the baseline for any election. But the law lets any eligible citizen apply to be added to the roll up to ten days before the last date of nomination filing for each phase of voting.

Between Oct. 1 and the cutoff dates, the commission received dozens of new enrollment applications. After reviewing each case, it added all valid names to the roll. That added about 300,000 voters, raising the final tally to around 74.5 million when the election finished.

“We confirmed every new voter so no one who qualifies is left off the roll,” the ECI stressed. “The change in numbers follows established rules, not a glitch or lack of transparency.”

The Congress party demanded a clearer explanation, but the ECI’s statement shows the extra voters came from legitimate late registrations, not from any error. Thus, the final voter count for Bihar’s election stands at 74.5 million.
