NYC region braces for ‘fast-moving’ snow storm Friday into Saturday: ‘Reasonable worst-case scenario of up to 10 inches’

New Yorkers can expect a late‑season snowfall that could blanket the city with up to 10 inches by early Saturday afternoon—a “reasonable worst‑case scenario,” officials said.

Starting late Friday afternoon, flurries should move in and grow heavier through Saturday night as temperatures fall into the high 20s. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for the New York City metro area, northeast New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island, running from Friday at 4 p.m. until Saturday at 1 p.m.

Forecasters expect the total accumulation in much of the region to fall between 4 and 8 inches, with a “reasonable worst-case scenario” of 10 inches on the table. Snow rates may reach an inch per hour, and a low probability of up to 2 inches per hour in the heaviest bands has been noted.

Travelers can brace for “hazardous” conditions on snow‑covered roads. AccuWeather’s senior meteorologist Tyler Roys warned that the “fast‑moving storm” will likely force shoveling and plowing in the city and that major slowdowns on roads and at airports are to be expected after Christmas. “It looks like a 3‑ to 6‑inch snowfall for the area coming probably very late tomorrow into tomorrow night,” Tom Kines told the Post on Thursday.

Kines also cautioned that while the storm won’t shut the city down entirely, it “will be a pain in our butts in terms of travel.” The “fast‑moving storm” should start creating poor driving conditions around Rush Hour on Friday afternoon and continue to impact commuters.

City officials, led by Acting City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan, announced that the agency has already begun preparations. In an X post, the DSNY said that delays to Friday’s trash collections “are to be expected as we work to pick up material and prepare vehicles for snow operations at the same time.”

The last time the city saw a forecast like this was in February, when roughly 3 inches of snow fell. Kines predicted that travel conditions should improve on Saturday, when the snow is expected to taper off by dawn, leaving “most of Saturday…just a cloudy day.”
