Inclusive, sustainable development of Manipur a national priority: President Murmu

Imphal, Dec 12 (LatestNewsX) – President Droupadi Murmu announced that the Centre has been engaging closely with local leaders, civil‑society groups, and various communities to promote inclusive and lasting progress in Manipur.
After laying the foundation stones for a number of development projects in the Naga‑settled Senapati district, she emphasized the government’s determination to bring growth to every part of the country.
The President noted that extra focus has gone into speeding up development in remote tribal areas.
She highlighted Manipur’s strength as stemming from its diverse culture, languages, and traditions, saying, “The hills and the valley have always complemented each other like two sides of the same beautiful land. I urge all communities to continue supporting the efforts for peace, understanding and reconciliation.”
The President expressed that the government acknowledges the aspirations of Manipur’s people and prioritizes dignity, security, and opportunities for tribal groups, ensuring they play a more significant role in national development.
Referring to the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN), she voiced confidence that the mission’s initiatives will further enhance life for tribal communities, particularly the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
Launched by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs in November 2023, the PM JANMAN scheme aims to uplift PVTGs by providing essential services, bridging development gaps, and ensuring basic amenities such as housing, clean water, health care, education, and connectivity.
The programme covers 75 PVTG communities across 18 states and one union territory, with nine ministries coordinating interventions that include solar power, mobile towers, roads, and skill training.
President Murmu singled out the Maram Naga tribe as Manipur’s sole PVTG community, expressing empathy for their concerns and affirming the Government’s commitment to the community’s well‑being and progress.
She added that the projects launched on Friday will strengthen security, education, health care, and local infrastructure. In recent years, hill districts have seen focused investments in national highways, rural roads, health facilities, water and electricity supply, and educational infrastructure.
Several livelihood programmes have also been introduced to improve the quality of life for tribal communities. “These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to supporting tribal communities while respecting their unique identities and traditions,” the President noted.
Earlier that day, the President received a warm welcome in a Naga village in the Senapati district. Before attending the ceremony at the district headquarters, she met with internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence who are now staying in relief camps.
A post on the President’s X handle reported, “President Droupadi Murmu interacted with a few Internally Displaced Persons in Senapati. She assured that the government is undertaking several measures for providing education to students, promoting livelihoods, rebuilding houses, skilling people and creating job opportunities, especially for the youth and others. She emphasised the importance of harmony, unity and sustained dialogue for peace and prosperity of the people of Manipur.”
On Friday morning, during the second day of her two‑day visit, President Murmu paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal in observance of the 86th Nupi Lal Day, which commemorates two women‑led uprisings against British rule. An official said she paid heartfelt homage to the courageous women warriors of Manipur whose bravery continues to inspire. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who accompanied her, also offered flowers at the memorial.
The President also offered prayers at the Shree Govindaji Temple located within the Palace Compound.
