Baloch Activists Stage Powerful Protest in Geneva to Spotlight Human Rights Crisis in Balochistan
In a bold move right outside the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, members of the Baloch National Movement (BNM) and human rights supporters gathered at the famous Broken Chair monument on September 16. They held a lively protest complete with fiery speeches, catchy slogans, a striking photo exhibition, and an awareness camp. The goal? To shine a global spotlight on the severe human rights violations rocking Balochistan, the resource-rich region in southwestern Pakistan.
Hatim Baloch, a key figure in BNM’s Central Committee and coordinator at Paank, kicked off the speeches with a heartfelt call to action. "Balochistan has endured decades of occupation ever since Pakistan forcibly annexed it in 1948," he said. "The Baloch people fight every day for their freedom, their right to liberty, and a dignified life. We’re here to expose the everyday horrors—extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and harsh collective punishments targeting students, academics, and political activists."
Dr. Naseem Baloch, BNM’s Chairman, stepped up next to stress the group’s long-term fight. "This isn’t a one-off event," he explained. "We’ve been at it for years with protests, joining global events, and hosting our own conferences. Think photo exhibitions and awareness camps that reveal stories the world rarely hears." These efforts aim to break the silence on Balochistan’s under-reported suffering, bringing hidden truths to light through visuals, voices, and direct appeals to international institutions.
Dr. Baloch didn’t hold back on the root causes, linking the violence to Balochistan’s vast natural resources like gas, gold, and minerals. "This mineral-rich land draws attention from global powers eager to strike deals with Pakistan," he noted. "Even Pakistani Prime Ministers have admitted they’d sell off Balochistan’s resources to pay national debts." But the Baloch people aren’t backing down—they’ve launched a fierce resistance. In response, Pakistan cracks down brutally with enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and even mass graves, turning the conflict into what Dr. Baloch calls a full-blown genocide.
He made a direct plea to the world: Don’t ignore the Baloch people’s plight just for geopolitical gains or economic ties. As Balochistan human rights violations continue to make headlines, this Geneva protest serves as a urgent reminder of the need for global action on enforced disappearances in Balochistan and the fight for Baloch freedom.
