The Oscars telecast set to leave ABC for YouTube in 2029

In a landmark move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Oscars will no longer appear on ABC after 2028, switching to a full‑online format on YouTube beginning in 2029 and continuing through 2033.

With ABC broadcasting the ceremony until that historic 100th year, the switch will see every aspect of the Academy’s production—red‑carpet coverage, the Governors Awards, and the nominations announcement—host on YouTube.

The new partnership was described in the press release as “the future home of the Oscars and our year‑round Academy programming,” a sentiment echoed by chief executive Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor, who noted that the move will expand worldwide access for the Academy’s work.

This transition marks the first occasion that one of the U.S. “big four” awards shows has forsaken traditional TV entirely; the Grammys, Emmys, and Tonys remain tied to broadcast partners. With a potential audience of around 2 billion, YouTube has stepped into a role that once belonged to one of the nation’s most watched non‑sports broadcasts.

The Oscars will stream free of charge on YouTube, with additional access for YouTube TV subscribers. While the financial terms of the deal were not revealed, the Academy highlighted the benefits for its members and film enthusiasts alike.

In a statement, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized the platform’s excitement: “The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry.

Partnering with the academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”
