On Saturday, Mohan Yadav, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, told the crowd that the city’s iconic Upper Lake—locally known as Bada Talab—will receive a deepening treatment. The decision comes as part of the state’s “Ganga Jal Samvardhan” campaign, a multi‑phase plan designed to boost water conservation across the province.
Yadav made the announcement while speaking at a ceremony marking the BJP’s second anniversary in the Huzur Assembly constituency of Bhopal. He explained that the initiative aims to safeguard every available drop of water, a goal that will be rolled out in successive stages throughout the state.
“I have been informed that large tracts of agricultural land in villages under the Huzur Assembly constituency are affected by water from the Upper Lake, particularly during the rainy season. To address this issue, I am announcing today that Bhopal’s Bada Talab will be deepened,” Yadav said.
This update follows a week earlier when the chief minister launched 20 shikara boats for tourists on the Upper Lake, one of Bhopal’s main attractions. The lake—built in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj—stands as India’s only major artificial lake of its kind and provides a significant portion of the city’s drinking water.
During the same event, held in the Fanda area under the Huzur Assembly constituency, Yadav also laid the cornerstone for a new commemorative gate dedicated to the ancient ruler Raja Vikramaditya. The project fits into the state government’s broader effort to erect nine such gates along key roads in the capital, each honoring a prominent historical figure like Raja Vikramaditya and Raja Bhoj.
Raja Vikramaditya, remembered as a Chakravarti emperor noted for courage, justice, sacrifice, generosity, and sound governance, and Raja Bhoj, famed for his architectural feats—including the construction of the Upper Lake—both play significant roles in Madhya Pradesh’s heritage. The initiative, approved by the cabinet earlier this year, aims to deepen the public’s appreciation for the region’s rich past and instill renewed pride in its legacy.
