Mumbai – South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, is eyeing a clean sweep of India’s Test series in a bid to follow New Zealand’s historic win in late 2024. The Black Caps took the first Test of that tour 8‑wicket, the second 113‑run, and capped the white‑wash with a 25‑run victory at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium – the first complete series win for any team in India in decades.
Bavuma says he will draw inspiration from New Zealand’s approach. “India is a tough place for touring sides,” he told reporters. “New Zealand’s game plan was inspiring. I’ll talk to Kane Williamson to learn what worked for us.”
South Africa will play two Tests in India, but Bavuma wants both wins. He also reminds fans that the team is set to face Pakistan in a Test series before heading to India. “Pakistan will be a tough series,” he said, “but it will build the momentum for the India tour.”
Speaking of India’s strengths, Bavuma praised Shubman Gill’s new role in the Test squad and highlighted Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for putting India among the world’s best teams. “They’ve made India a force to be feared,” he said, “but the game will always change.”
Bavuma is also excited to meet the younger talent on both sides. He thinks the next generation will keep India strong, but South Africa also aims to challenge that dominance. “Our job is not to let India shine all the time,” he added. “We’ll play our best to keep them on their toes.”
