Bhubaneswar, Nov 17 – The Census of India 2027 is kicking off its first‑phase pre‑test in Odisha, and officials are calling on residents to help out.
Census officials say the pre‑test will run from 10 to 30 November 2025 in 20 revenue villages in Tentulikhunti Tahasil, Nabarangpur, 44 revenue villages in Thakurmunda Tahasil, Mayurbhanj, plus Ward 22 of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Ward 17 of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation.
Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, Director of Census Operations for Odisha, told reporters that local school teachers and supervisors will cover every household in the selected areas. “People must answer the questionnaire,” he urged. “Your cooperation lets us gather accurate data.”
The pre‑test is part of the House Listing and Housing Census, the opening phase of the bigger 2027 effort overseen by India’s Registrar General and the Minister of Home Affairs, in partnership with the Odisha state government.
A key feature of the 2027 census is a digital data‑collection system. Enumerators will use mobile apps built by the Delhi Census Office to assign house numbers, capture information about a dwelling’s condition, amenities and household assets, and then geo‑tag each home with a Digital Layout Mapping App.
Thanks to the new Self‑Enumeration Portal, citizens can also fill out their household details online, reducing paperwork and speeding up data processing.
Residents in the pre‑test zones should expect an enumerator to visit their home soon. The census team says these visits will help fine‑tune the digital platform and ensure a smooth roll‑out when the full 2027 census goes live.
