Trump may be a more serious contender for Nobel Peace Prize in 2026

US President Donald Trump has often been praised for his attempts to broker deals, but a University of Birmingham professor argues that his record isn’t flawless. Speaking in an interview, the professor highlighted both successes and shortcomings in Trump’s approach to peace talks.

Trump’s biggest claim to fame as a peacemaker came in his handling of North Korea. The former president’s bold travel to Pyongyang in 2018 and his later summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong‑un captured headlines worldwide. The professor noted that these meetings did break a long dead‑lock and forced the cold‑war nation to sit down at once before.

However, the same professor pointed out that Trump’s other peace efforts often stalled or back‑fired. His attempts to ease tensions on the Middle‑East front—through the proposed Abraham Accords—were praised, but critics say the agreements didn’t resolve deeper conflicts. In the South China Sea, Trump’s policies in 2020 were seen as a mixed blessing. While he reduced diplomatic pressure for a time, the long‑term status of territorial disputes remains unchanged.

Outside of those high‑profile negotiations, the professor stresses that Trump sometimes used his own naming and brand to dodge policy. When he called governments “fascist” or “fraudulent,” it made diplomacy harder and deepening grievances. The professor also says that a willingness to compromise is key for lasting peace, and Trump’s abrupt policy reversals and “America First” rhetoric have left some allies uneasy.

Still, the professor acknowledges that a president has different challenges. Trump handled several wars with fewer casualties, and his structures for raising economic stability in a few key regions cannot be ignored. Yet, the professor concludes that calling Trump a “spotless peacemaker” would be overstating his achievements.

In short, Donald Trump’s peace record is bright spots and gaps. For Americans and observers worldwide, the lesson appears to be that resolutions depend on fragile diplomatic groundwork—something that any president, including Trump, can only provide partially.
