UN humanitarians start collecting supplies offloaded at Zikim crossing in northern Gaza

United Nations aid workers kicked off a new surge of deliveries at the Zikim crossing, the lone open entry point into northern Gaza, just after Israel decided to reopen the gate earlier this week.

Between Thursday and Sunday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and its partners hauled more than 5,400 tonnes of supplies from all three open crossings. The haul included food, tents, tarpaulins, blankets, mattresses, medicine and animal fodder, reports Xinhua news agency.

Heavy rains on Friday slammed northern Gaza, flooding homes and roads. OCHA teams rushed to the hardest-hit areas over the weekend, first spotting damage and then dropping off emergency aid. More than 13,000 families were estimated to have been hit by the flooding.

Over the weekend, shelter partners distributed at least 9,000 tents, 83,000 tarpaulins and 59,000 blankets, with thousands more on the way. “We’re moving quickly, but the volume of shelter and other essential supplies that can enter through the UN‑coordinated system stays low,” OCHA said.

With cooler temperatures on the horizon and winter fast approaching, the UN stresses that humanitarians must be allowed to widen their shelter response to meet Gaza’s huge needs.

Food security partners say that a recent uptick in the number of food parcels entering Gaza lets them plan to resume giving each household two food parcels and a bag of flour. Earlier last week, aid distribution in the north was cut back to only high‑energy biscuits and a single bag of flour per household because of obstacles: priority moving of non‑humanitarian cargo, customs delays, and restricted access to northern crossings.
