Islamabad: On Monday, residents from Northern Karachi clashed with authorities at the Nagan Chowrangi pumping station after a growing water crisis prompted a protest, local outlets reported. The demonstration, which unfolded on Sunday, saw many women in attendance. Talkters on the scene exchanged heated remarks with staff from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), according to The Express Tribune. Some protesters allegedly tried to physically push back the workers. Protesters claimed that KWSC had not returned water to their homes for more than a month, despite repeated promises. Several women explained how buying water tankers, which had become a staple, was now financially unviable amid ongoing household budget strains. While marching, residents shouted “Pani do, pani do” and called for an immediate resumption of service. Police arrived after receiving complaints about the unrest and spoke with the demonstrators. A statement from KWSC on Saturday revealed that extended power cuts had left Karachi in a severe water shortage last November, with the company reporting an 884‑million‑gallon shortfall in the first 23 days of the month. The KWSC spokesperson added that repeated outages at major pumping stations—caused by K‑Electric—caused frequent halts in pumping operations, which in turn disrupted the city’s supply. Officials urged the electric company to guarantee a steady power supply at all key sites to prevent further interruptions. “We are coordinating closely with K‑Electric to reduce downtime,” the spokesperson said, noting that normal water levels had been restored following the latest power fix and that additional improvements are underway.
