In New Delhi, the Delhi High Court has slammed a police officer for allegedly abusing and threatening lawyers right inside the courtroom. Justice Arun Monga made it clear during a hearing in the Rameshwar v. State Govt. of NCT of Delhi case that officers like this one are meant to uphold the law, not act like bullies.
The court learned about the incident involving Sub-Inspector Narinder from the Okhla Industrial Area police station. Narinder reportedly misbehaved with the lawyers representing both the appellant and the complainant. Things escalated when he even intimidated a senior counsel who stepped in to help the court.
“This kind of arrogance from someone in uniform is unacceptable,” the court said. Narinder can’t treat his role as a license to threaten court officers who are just doing their job to ensure justice. The judge pointed out that no one is above the law, no matter what they think.
At first, Justice Monga considered ordering an FIR against the officer for police misconduct. But Narinder offered an unconditional apology, so the court held off. Still, the judge wants it official: Narinder must submit the apology in writing as an affidavit by the next day.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about police behavior in India, especially when it clashes with the justice system. ()
