Israeli govt appoints David Zini as new Shin Bet chief, to take office on Oct 5

Israel’s government has picked David Zini, a former top army officer, to lead the Shin Bet domestic security agency for the next five years. The Prime Minister’s Office announced the decision, and Zini will step into the role on October 5.

Zini brings a wealth of experience from his senior positions in the Israeli military, where he handled key operations, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

But this choice has sparked major backlash from Israel’s opposition and many in the public. Critics point to Zin’i far-right leanings and say he’s against the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal while pushing for what he calls an “eternal war,” as noted in Israeli media.

The controversy ties into bigger issues too. Right now, investigators are probing close aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for possible private business links with Qatar amid the ongoing multi-front war. Opponents worry that a Shin Bet chief handpicked by Netanyahu might try to derail that probe.

Adding to the tension, Netanyahu faces a long-running trial on charges like bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Some fear Zini could help Netanyahu dodge court dates by citing urgent national security duties.

Zini steps in to replace Ronen Bar, who ran Shin Bet during the devastating Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Many hold Bar responsible for the security lapses that day.

Back in late March, the government moved to fire Bar over Netanyahu’s stated “lack of trust,” going against advice from the Attorney General’s Office. Israel’s High Court paused the dismissal while reviewing the case, but Bar chose to quit anyway in mid-June. Since then, the agency’s deputy—whose name stays secret—has filled in temporarily.

After approving Zini’s appointment, Netanyahu explained his reasoning. He said the post-October 7 reality calls for fresh leadership from outside Shin Bet. “Major General Zini’s critical thinking, his knack for outside-the-box ideas, and his strong background in building and running forces make him the right fit to lead Shin Bet right now,” Netanyahu added.
