Summary executions, sexual violence in Sudan’s El Fasher continue: UN

The United Nations says violence is still raging in Sudan’s North Darfur state after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized El Fasher on Oct. 26.

Humanitarian workers report that civilians, including women and children, are still being killed and sexually assaulted. The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) received credible evidence of these crimes from inside the barricaded city.

“OCHA’s field teams have heard that hundreds of civilians, also humanitarian staff, were killed,” the agency said. “Many people remain trapped inside El Fasher with no way to communicate with the outside world.” The RSF, it added, is blocking the delivery of lifesaving aid, violating international law that obliges combatants to allow humanitarian access.

Nearly 71,000 people have fled from El Fasher and nearby areas since the city’s fall, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported. Most of those displaced are now in overcrowded camps in Tawila, about 40 km away. Stories of killings, abductions and sexual violence spread along the routes the refugees took.

Conditions in Tawila are dire. Families live in the open air or in makeshift shelters, food supplies are dwindling, and clean water is scarce. OCHA says the UN and partners are providing daily meals, medical care, water, sanitation, nutrition and psychosocial support, but those efforts meet only a fraction of the massive needs because of funding gaps.

Violence is also escalating in the Kordofan region, prompting large‑scale displacement. OCHA cites reports of possible summary executions in Bara, a locality in North Kordofan. The IOM says from Oct. 26‑31, about 37,000 people left Bara, Um Rawaba and surrounding villages, facing insecurity, food shortages and ruined infrastructure.

Only 28 % of the 2025 humanitarian response budget for Sudan has been funded so far. OCHA has called for urgent, flexible money to help millions struggling in the conflict, noting that $1.17 billion of the $4.16 billion needed has been received.

The situation in Sudan remains fluid, with ongoing violence, mass displacement and blocked aid highlighting the urgent need for international support.
