Pakistani airstrike in Balochistan injures nine civilians, claims rights body

At least nine Baloch civilians were hurt when Pakistani military aircraft bombed the Chiltan Hills near Quetta on October 28, the Baloch National Movement’s Human Rights Department (Paank) said on Thursday.

Paank said the strike hit a group of young people who had gathered for a picnic. Witnesses named the injured as Jahanzaib Shahi, Imrani Sumalani, Maqbool Ahmed, Zahid Baloch, Manzoor Ahmed, Daulat Khan, Arbab Baloch, Rafeeq Lehri and Wajid Ali.

The rights group says the attack is part of a wider pattern of air operations that put civilians at risk. “The Chiltan Hills area has seen a surge in military presence and air activity,” Paank wrote. “People feel fear and insecurity when air strikes hit places with no confirmed militant activity.”

Paank added that a drone strike in October last year killed six people, including four children, in Zehri town. “Despite video footage and eyewitness reports, the government denies responsibility,” the group said.

The group slammed the Chiltan attack as a serious breach of domestic and international law and called for an independent investigation. Families of victims report pressure to stay silent, and journalists say access to the site has been blocked.

“We see a clear pattern of impunity,” Paank warned. “Without global oversight, incidents like this will keep happening.”

Paank urged the United Nations Human Rights Council and international human‑rights bodies to launch an independent inquiry into the Chiltan Hills strike and all previous airstrikes in Balochistan. It also asked the world to pressure Pakistan to follow international humanitarian law and protect civilians.
