Shubman Gill hits another record‑breaking century for India as West Indies head to the second Test in New Delhi
In a stunning display for the India cricket team, Shubman Gill has added a fourth‑fiftieth‑run Test century to his resume, helping India secure a powerful innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The 26‑year‑old captain, who stepped in for Rohit Sharma, has now earned five Test centuries since taking the helm—a milestone that ties him with former captain Virat Kohli, who also hit five in a calendar year.
Gill achieved the milestone in his 12th Test match as captain, standing second only to England’s Alastair Cook and Sunil Gavaskar for the fastest to five Test hundreds since taking the skipper’s bat. His average of 84.81 in those matches is the second best for a captain with at least seven Tests, next to the legendary Don Bradman.
India’s new home record of 518/5 set the tone. Gill finished on 129 not out, his highest score in the 39 matches he has played in the World Test Championship (WTC). He now holds the record for most runs by an Indian in the WTC and is the only Indian to have 10 centuries in the competition. With 2,826 runs at a 43.47 average and a strike rate of 61.36, Gill continues to be a driving force for the national side.
On the West Indies’ side, their fast bowlers faced a rare challenge. They bowled 318 balls in a single session without taking a wicket—a situation that has happened only twice before: against New Zealand in 1972 and Pakistan in 2016. The slow pace provided India with an edge in the run chase.
Overall, Shubman Gill’s blistering century and the team’s strong performance mark a bright start to India’s Test campaign under his leadership. The West Indies will look to rebound in the next fixture and take the series back from the visiting team.
