“Hindi is a friend of Indian languages, not a competition,” says Amit Shah on Hindi Diwas at 5th Rajbhasha Sammelan

Amit Shah Promotes Hindi as a Friend to All Indian Languages on Hindi Diwas

Gandhinagar, Gujarat: Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a strong case for Hindi during the Hindi Diwas celebrations, urging everyone to view it as a supportive friend to India’s diverse languages, not a rival. Speaking at the 5th Rajbhasha Sammelan in Gandhinagar on September 14, Shah stressed that Hindi and other Indian languages can thrive together without any clash.

"Hindi is not here to compete with Indian languages—it’s their ally," Shah said in his address. He pointed to Gujarat as a perfect real-life example. Though Gujarati is the main language of the state, legends like Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and KM Munshi all championed Hindi alongside Gujarati. "This harmony has helped both languages grow beautifully," he added.

Shah went further, calling for Hindi to expand beyond everyday talk and official use. He wants it to become the go-to language for science, technology, courts, and even the police force. "When we use our Indian languages in these areas, it builds a stronger, direct bond with the people," he explained. This push aims to make Hindi more practical and widespread across India.

The event felt personal for Shah, as Gandhinagar is his own parliamentary constituency. He noted that the Rajbhasha Sammelan used to stick to Delhi but has now spread out to places like Hyderabad, Pune, Surat, and this time, Gandhinagar. The goal? To bring Hindi closer to everyday folks and get more people excited about speaking it.

In a friendly gesture, Shah invited chief ministers and other leaders from all states to write to him in their local languages. "I’ll respond in the same language you use," he promised, showing his commitment to embracing India’s linguistic diversity.

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also marked Hindi Diwas with warm wishes on social media platform X. "Happy Hindi Diwas to everyone! Hindi isn’t just words—it’s our living heritage, tied to our culture and identity," Modi posted. He encouraged Indians to unite in strengthening all languages, including Hindi, and pass them proudly to the next generation. Modi highlighted how Hindi’s rising global respect fills us all with pride and motivation.

These Hindi Diwas messages underscore a bigger vision: celebrating India’s rich language tapestry while boosting Hindi’s role in modern life.
