India is producing more energy than ever before: Hardeep Puri

India’s push for energy self-reliance is hitting new highs, with record production levels fueled by a smarter mix of supply sources. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared these updates at an industry event in New Delhi on September 21.
“India is producing more energy than ever before,” Puri said. He pointed out that as energy demand surges, the country has wisely spread out its imports—from just 27 countries before to 40 now. Even cooking gas, once mostly from one supplier, now draws from a wider pool. India’s energy mix today blends in biofuels, green hydrogen, and more innovative options.
The minister highlighted India’s booming economy, growing at about 6.5 percent, where energy use is rising six times faster than the global average. Looking ahead, international experts predict India will drive around 25 percent of the world’s extra energy needs over the next 20 years.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is ramping up efforts for strong energy security. While consumption keeps climbing, the focus stays on boosting homegrown production. Take green hydrogen, for instance: The government has already greenlit 862,000 tonnes of annual output for 19 companies and awarded 3,000 megawatts of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 firms.
India’s renewable energy sector is exploding too, making it one of the fastest-growing markets worldwide. The country boasts over 223 gigawatts of installed capacity, including 108 gigawatts from solar power and 51 gigawatts from wind energy. The big goal? Hit 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Puri also noted that natural gas will play a bigger role, jumping from 6 percent of the energy mix now to 15 percent by 2030. These steps show India’s commitment to a sustainable, secure energy future.
