Punjab Launches Urgent 5-Day Cleanup for Flood-Hit Grain Markets Ahead of Paddy Season
The Punjab government has kicked off a fast-paced five-day drive to fix up grain markets, or mandis, wrecked by recent floods. This move ensures farmers can sell their paddy without any hassle when the procurement season starts on September 16.
The campaign began on Sunday and targets flood-ravaged districts where mandis are still swamped with water and clogged with silt. Officials have a tight deadline: wrap up all restoration work by September 19, just days before the big paddy buying rush.
Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian shared that the goal is to give farmers a smooth experience at the markets. "The Bhagwant Singh Mann government stands rock-solid with our farmers," he said. "We’re pulling out all stops so no one faces trouble getting their crops to the mandis."
Khudian added that Punjab Mandi Board officials and District Mandi Officers (DMOs) are on the ground, personally overseeing the cleanup to get everything operational. "Our teams are geared up to tackle flood challenges head-on and protect farmers’ livelihoods," he noted.
In many spots, key fixes are already underway—like repairing infrastructure, draining out standing water, and clearing away silt buildup. The government also promises quick procurement and instant payments for farmers’ produce.
Paddy procurement is a lifeline for Punjab’s farming economy, and despite the flood damage, all mandis across the state will be ready to roll smoothly.
On a related note, the Punjab government started a special girdawari survey statewide on Saturday to assess flood losses. Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian urged officials to keep it transparent, on time, and effective. This way, every affected family gets the compensation they deserve without delays.
