A day after the sudden death of legendary film director Rob Reiner (78) and his wife Michele (70), their children are trying to keep the family together while the case moves forward.
Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on the early morning of December 14. Police say their son, 32‑year‑old Nick Reiner, who has long struggled with drug addiction and a diagnosed schizophrenia, is the suspect. He was taken into custody by the LA Police Department that evening and has been charged with the murders.
The family’s eldest, 34‑year‑old Jake Reiner, has reportedly taken on a “paternalistic” role, helping his sister Romy—who turns 28 this Saturday—and the rest of the family cope with the trauma. “His motto is ‘family first’—that’s something Rob and Michele had always prioritized and taught their children,” an insider told the Daily Mail.
Jake and Romy spent the week in the family’s beach house, joined by Michele’s sisters Suzanne and Martine, Romy’s boyfriend Alex Silberberg, and Jake’s partner Maria Gilfillan. The source said they were “sheltering from the storm—both literally and emotionally” and that they wanted to “come together as a family for the festive week and to mark Romy’s birthday, however subdued the celebrations.”
Nick will be unable to attend the holidays in any capacity, his lawyer said. He is expected to spend Christmas in jail, while Jake and Romy are facing a “first painful Christmas without their parents,” the insider added.
The case is still developing. Police have secured the scene and are continuing to investigate, while friends and colleagues from the film industry have issued statements of support for the Reiner family.
