Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said that at 6 a.m. local time on Sunday, it spotted nine Chinese aircraft and six navy ships flying and sailing just outside Taiwan’s waters. Two of those planes crossed the median line that marks the halfway point between the islands and mainland China, entering Taiwan’s northern Area Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The MND tweeted the information on its X account and said its forces were watching the situation closely.
Earlier, on Saturday, the MND reported a similar flare‑up. Up to 6 a.m. that day, 10 PLA aircraft and seven PLAN ships were observed around Taiwan, and five of the planes crossed into the northern ADIZ. Taiwan’s military replied that it would respond as needed.
These moves come amid growing concerns that China’s newest weapons are specifically designed to counter Taiwan’s asymmetric defense strategy. Experts say Taiwan has long relied on low‑cost, high‑impact tactics to deter a possible large‑scale invasion. The new probes signal escalating tensions between the two sides.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), operates its own government, economy and military. China, under its One China principle, insists that the island is part of its territory and has repeatedly threatened military action. The dispute dates back to 1949, when the ROC government retreated to Taiwan after the Communist Party seized mainland China.
For now, Taipei remains on alert, watching numerous Chinese flights and ships near its borders. The situation is watched closely by governments, defense analysts and anyone following cross‑strait security.
