Delhi: L-G, CM warn officials against negligence in fight against pollution

On December 4, officials were cautioned again about the city’s battle with smog and pollution during a high‑level session at Lok Niwas, which was led by Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The meeting demanded that every bureau stay in close touch so that pollution measures would be stricter and more steady. The Chief Minister warned that any lapse by a department or officer on the issue would not be tolerated.

She directed District Magistrates to personally check how clean their zones are and how well the anti‑pollution strategies are being applied. Participants included Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, and senior officials from relevant ministries. It was made unmistakably clear that dust cannot linger in the capital under any circumstance.

The session also pointed out that trash and loose debris are major pollution sources. Therefore, ministries have been tasked with stepping up road‑cleaning efforts. DDA staff were ordered to clear all junk from vacant plots under their control and to prevent those sites from being dumped on again. MCD officials were told to launch a vigorous cleanliness campaign across Delhi and to employ extra tactics for dust reduction.

The Chief Minister added that district magistrates can now file ACRs against government employees who are negligent. A separate review board, headed by the Chief Secretary, will monitor pollution‑control progress daily and issue directives or guidance as required; compliance will be mandatory for all departments. Her overarching goal is to secure a lasting fix for pollution so that citizens are not harmed now or later. To this end, mist‑spray systems have already been set up in the ITO area, which she inspected on Thursday, and early trials yielded encouraging results. A full rollout plan for mist‑spray across major roads is currently being drafted. The Chief Minister also tasked the DPCC with issuing fines against any government department that falls behind on pollution controls or cleanliness duties, while FIRs will target agencies that cut roads without permission or fail to repair them afterward. She stressed that the chief officials of each department will be personally accountable and that no public or private entity will escape responsibility for neglect.
