A serious threat is developing in King County, Washington, as officials have activated a Flash Flood Warning after a levee failure only a few days after the area was hit by historic flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, the breach of the Green River Levee in the west‑central part of the county has sent floodwater racing along the Green River in Tukwila. The damage occurred just before noon Pacific Standard Time, and the warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. the same night.
The failure could produce life‑threatening floods in neighborhoods close to the levee line, with towns such as Kent, Renton, and Tukwila among those most at risk. In addition, the warning covers surrounding streams and drainage systems, including the Green River, Duwamish Waterway and Cedar River.
If you find yourself in a low‑lying area, move to higher ground immediately. In its alert, the National Weather Service warned: “Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.”
The region has already endured devastating flooding, causing many highways to close, thousands of residents to be evacuated, and dozens of emergency rescues. Another atmospheric river is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds through Tuesday, potentially worsening conditions.
