Nepal’s Political Shake-Up: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki Takes Oath as Interim Leader Amid Gen-Z Protests
In a big move for Nepal’s politics, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is stepping up as the head of the interim government. She’ll take her oath today, Friday, after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli quit due to massive protests led by Gen-Z youth. This comes straight from reports by Nepal News.
Sources from the President’s Office say the ceremony happens at Sheetal Niwas, the President’s residence, at 8:45 pm local time. It’s a key moment as Nepal deals with unrest and calls for change.
Karki made history as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, serving from July 2016 to June 2017. She’s famous for her honest work and big rulings on transitional justice and election fights. Starting her law career in 1979, she became a senior advocate in 2007 and joined the Supreme Court in 2009. The Gen-Z movement in Nepal picked her because of her neutral stance and strong reputation.
Born on June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar, Karki studied political science and law, building a solid base for her role.
The drama kicked off with Nepal’s parliament dissolving after those intense Gen-Z protests against corruption and shaky politics. Protesters forced Oli’s resignation just days ago, and dissolving parliament was one of their top demands. But it’s stirring up talks—some parties want a constitutional fix, while civil society groups push for sticking to the rules on how to dissolve it.
Gen-Z leaders who led the anti-government rallies in Nepal called for scrapping parliament and tweaking the Constitution to match what people really want.
On Friday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairperson of the National Assembly released a joint statement on the crisis. They expressed shock over the deaths and damage from the protests on Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 (Nepal’s calendar dates). "We’re heartbroken by the young lives lost and the police officers who died on duty," the statement said. They offered deep condolences to families and wished quick healing for the injured, urging the government to provide all needed medical help.
The leaders also slammed the arson and vandalism on Bhadra 24, 2082, which hit the Federal Parliament Building in Baneshwor, the Secretariat in Singha Durbar, government offices, homes, media spots, shops, and even historical sites. "This has caused huge, lasting harm to Nepal," they noted, pointing to the fires that spread across the country.
Looking at the tough times ahead, the statement praised President Ram Chandra Paudel for seeking solutions through constitutional steps. It stressed protecting Nepal’s sovereignty, freedoms, borders, unity, and independence. "We must stick to the rule of law and constitutional ways—no shortcuts," they added firmly.
As Nepal’s Gen-Z protests reshape the nation, all eyes are on Karki’s leadership to bring stability and address the youth’s demands for real change.
