India is gearing up to become a global leader in green hydrogen technology, with strong plans for innovation, manufacturing, and deployment. Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik shared this vision during the closing session of the first Green Hydrogen R&D Conference in New Delhi.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is pushing India to not just use this clean energy but to pioneer it worldwide. “Green hydrogen is key to cutting carbon in tough industries, opening new trade opportunities, and building a secure, eco-friendly future,” Naik said.
He highlighted how this mission supports India’s goal of Net Zero emissions by 2070. Green hydrogen can transform hard-to-decarbonize sectors like steel, cement, fertilizers, shipping, and mobility. Plus, it promises to boost jobs, cut reliance on imports, and make Indian industries competitive on the global stage.
As countries tighten carbon rules, Naik stressed that India’s focus on hydrogen will keep its businesses ready for the future. The government has already backed over 200 research and development projects in renewables, hydrogen, fuel cells, and storage tech. With dedicated funding, testing labs, and startup incubators, Indian innovators are turning bold ideas into real breakthroughs.
“This conference shows our commitment to turning labs into innovation hubs and startups into world leaders,” Naik added. He encouraged young researchers to aim for game-changing solutions, not just small tweaks.
The two-day event, organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, drew 1,347 participants. It featured 17 technical sessions, five panel discussions, eight roundtables, and a startup exhibition showcasing India’s latest hydrogen innovations.
