Violence at top Patna, Muzaffarpur hospitals after patients’ deaths

Patna, Dec 3 – A tense scene erupted at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Wednesday after a quarrel between a doctor and a dead patient’s family turned physical. The clash forced the doctors to halt all outpatient services immediately, leaving hundreds of patients in distress. Only the emergency department stayed open.

The patient, who died in Mahendru, Sultanganj, had been admitted to PMCH three days earlier after suffering a brain hemorrhage. His son, Aman Singh, says the fracas sparked when his sister asked a doctor about their father’s condition during an ECG test. According to him, the doctor reacted angrily, berated him as “stupid,” shoved him, and even snatched his iPhone. The argument escalated into a fight on both sides, and Aman claims a Rs 1 lakh he was carrying fell out of his pocket and was lost amid the chaos.

Police were called right away. An escort team intervened and freed Aman Singh from the doctors’ grasp, according to witnesses. Aman later filed a formal complaint at the local station. Station House Officer Sajjad Gaddi confirmed that the incident occurred in the PMCH emergency ward. “A complaint has been registered, and the matter is under investigation. Necessary action will be taken against whoever is found guilty,” he said.

The event has caused major disruptions at Bihar’s largest government hospital, prompting patients to urge the swift reopening of outpatient services.

A similar incident unfolded earlier on Wednesday at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, following the death of a patient. The tragedy sparked a violent clash between the family and the doctors, prompting several vehicles to be vandalized and the closure of the OPD.

Prakash Kumar and Avinash Kumar from Chakmahmad village, under Ahiyapur police jurisdiction, drove their father, Rajgir Paswan, to SKMCH after his condition worsened. After multiple tests and the start of emergency treatment, the brothers alleged that the attending doctor administered seven to eight injections without proper assessment, raising suspicion. When they questioned the doctor about the shots, tensions flared.

They claim the doctor hurled “caste-based slurs” at them, dragged them into an unmonitored wing, and, with a security guard, violently struck them with sticks and hockey sticks. The guard allegedly stole a mobile phone worth Rs 1.5 lakh, and their car was vandalized on hospital grounds. Following their father’s death, their mother sat outside, crying. When the brothers accused the doctor of negligence, they were reportedly beaten again. Both sustained multiple injuries, with head wounds and torn clothing. They then carried their father’s body and belongings back to their car, proceeded to the SKMCH police outpost, and filed an initial report along with the damaged vehicle.

The doctors and their supporters countered that the family assaulted the doctor. In protest, SKMCH physicians went on strike, shutting down the OPD. Although the medical college administration has been negotiating, the outpatient services remain closed. The doctor seeks accountability for those who allegedly assaulted him, while the family’s accusations are being taken seriously.

Ahiyapur police in-charge Rohan Kumar confirmed that a physical confrontation occurred inside the hospital on Wednesday morning. He added that action will follow once written complaints from both sides are received and reviewed.
