Delhi Police caught an assistant sub-inspector and his helper red-handed taking a Rs 5,000 bribe in south Delhi’s Mehrauli neighborhood. The bust happened Thursday, and authorities from the Vigilance Unit shared the details Saturday.
The officer, ASI Pappu Ram Meena from Mehrauli police station, and local resident Mohd. Shakir faced arrest after demanding cash to release a man’s seized two-wheeler. The bike belonged to a Neb Sarai resident who works for a recruitment agency. Police say Meena grabbed the vehicle illegally during a minor dispute on September 10.
It all started when the man argued with a local property dealer. A police call came in about the quarrel, and Meena handled the initial check. He marked the case as “enquiry closed,” but then showed up at the man’s home, broke the bike’s lock, and took it to the station anyway.
Meena demanded Rs 10,000 to give the bike back, according to the complaint. The man refused the full amount at first but agreed to pay Rs 5,000 as a down payment. Shakir, who lives near the LIC office in Mehrauli, acted as the middleman to collect the money for Meena.
The victim didn’t stay quiet. On September 18, he reported the bribe demand to the Vigilance Branch. Officers set up a trap at the Mehrauli station. When Shakir took the Rs 5,000 from the man Friday, the team swooped in and grabbed both him and Meena. They recovered the cash right from the officer.
Police filed an FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Vigilance station. This case highlights ongoing efforts to crack down on police corruption in Delhi, where bribe scandals continue to make headlines.
