Kolkata police said a Bangladeshi fishing boat was caught off the city’s coast on Sunday. The Indian Coast Guard found a trawler when it patrolled the Bay of Bengal and discovered it had entered Indian waters without permission.
The trawler was carrying 29 fishermen from Bangladesh. After boarding, the Coast Guard seized the vessel and immediately handed the crew over to the Fraserganj Coast Police Station in south‑24 Parganas district.
Police say the fishermen are now in custody for trespassing in Indian territorial waters. Officers from the Sundarbans police district are investigating how the boat slipped into the country. The men will appear before the Kakdwip sub‑divisional court on Monday, where prosecutors plan to seek their continued detention for further questioning.
The incident follows a spike in cross‑border fishing disputes. In September, a similar Bangladeshi trawler with 13 fishermen was caught and the crew was arrested. Since then, the Indian Coast Guard has stepped up patrols and surveillance along the coast.
Satinath Patra, secretary of the Kakdwip Fishermen’s Union, said the matter had alerted Indian authorities: “The Bangladesh trawler entered our waters illegally. The Coast Guard seized the boat and the crew, and the police are now investigating.”
Both sides often report the other’s vessels violating its jurisdiction in the Bay of Bengal. For India, this latest seizure underscores the government’s focus on protecting its maritime borders and ensuring the safety of its fishing communities.
