He is a very unorthodox thinker: Gavaskar praises Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy decisions

India’s cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has given a big thumbs-up to T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav for his bold choices during the Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman. Suryakumar guided the team to a third straight victory, keeping India unbeaten as they advance to the Super Fours stage.

In their final group game on Friday, India chose to bat first against Oman. Suryakumar made headlines by skipping his turn at the crease, dropping himself to number 11 in the batting order. This let all 10 other players in the lineup get some batting practice. While some experts slammed the move, Gavaskar called it a smart play.

Chatting on Sony Sports Network, the former India skipper explained his take. “If he had batted even one over, he might have smashed a few fours and sixes, which would help his form. But after his explosive knock against Pakistan, Suryakumar probably doesn’t need the practice. He might have figured Kuldeep Yadav’s batting could save the day if wickets tumble fast in a big game. That’s likely why he pushed Kuldeep up the order.”

Gavaskar, who knows a thing or two about captaincy, labeled the 35-year-old Mumbai batter an “innovative thinker.” He added, “Suryakumar thinks outside the box. Remember that game in Sri Lanka? He bowled himself and even handed the ball to Rinku Singh. It flipped a match that was slipping away and sealed the win for India. That’s his style—maybe that’s why he sat out and sent in Kuldeep and Arshdeep Singh instead.”

India wrapped up the win by 21 runs over Oman, finishing the group stage on a high. The Men in Blue joined Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan in the Super Fours.

Now, the tournament heats up with six matches in this round. Each team faces the other three once, and the top two on the points table head to the final.

India kicks off their Super Fours run against rivals Pakistan on Saturday, September 21. They’ll follow that with clashes against Bangladesh on September 24 and Sri Lanka on September 26. Cricket fans can’t wait to see what tactical twists Suryakumar pulls next in the Asia Cup 2025.
