Exclusive | Ron Johnson tells ‘Pod Force One’ he is perplexed by ‘bizarre’ mystery surrounding would-be Trump assassin
Washington – Senator Ron Johnson, who chairs the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, gave a candid briefing on his growing frustration over the lack of information about Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man widely reported as a would‑be assassin of the President.
“All of a sudden I realize, here we are a year later, I haven’t heard a peep out of this. We still don’t know about, what did his social media accounts say?” Johnson lamented on Pod Force One. “Why haven’t we unlocked this information? Why doesn’t America know more about it?” he added. “There’s some odd things about it, him appearing in commercials for, was it BlackRock, just like the other potential assassin down in Palm Beach. I mean, it’s just bizarre stuff. I mean, explain this to us.”
Johnson explained that he had subpoenaed the FBI in July for documents on Crooks—he calls these “friendly subpoenas”. He argued that the administration and some senior officials seem preoccupied with other high‑profile investigations, implying that what he sees as crucial evidence may be buried among “so many enormous messes”.
He also hopes telecommunications firms will assist in piecing together the mystery. “I think this was a news outlet, it might have been New York Post [that] did a geo‑positioning search on Crooks’ phone and kind of like that Family Circus deals, all over the place, the FBI headquarters,” Johnson recounted. “My staff kind of cautions me about talking about that, because we’re not quite sure of the validity of that … but I mean, again, those are the kinds of questions that deserve answers.”
“It’s those kind of questions that go unanswered that just feed into conspiracy theories.”
Johnson noted that the senator’s team has yet to uncover a major breakthrough in the Butler, Pa. shooting, but hints that some pieces of the puzzle are beginning to surface. “It took us a long time. I think we’re finally starting to get some of the information from the Pennsylvania State Police,” he said, offering no further detail.
The investigation follows several unsettling revelations: a private investigator found a device linked to Crooks pinging a high school in Bethel Park at the time of the attack, raising doubts that he acted solo; the same investigator also noted that Crooks had used “they/them” pronouns and was preoccupied with political violence.
While the full episode of Pod Force One is available on YouTube, the current update underscores that the Senate is pressing for more information and that the narrative around Crooks remains riddled with unanswered questions.
