On Tuesday, Mumbai celebrated the 94th birthday of legendary actor Shammi Kapoor, often called the “Elvis Presley of India.”
Veteran star Jackie Shroff honored the icon by posting a video montage on Instagram, blending clips of Kapoor’s early films with the upbeat track “Jawaniyan Yeh Mast Mast” from 1957’s Tumsa Nahin Dekha. In the caption he simply wrote, “Always in our hearts.”
Kapoor’s career spanned five decades and more than 100 movies. He first appeared on screen in the 1953 film Jeewan Jyoti, but it was Tumsa Nahi Dekha (1957) that launched his fame. Fans still love classics like Dil Deke Dekho, Junglee, Professor, Dil Tera Diwana, China Town, Rajkumar, Kashmir Ki Kali, Janwar, Teesri Manzil, An Evening In Paris, Brahmachari, Andaz and Prince.
Later films – Parvarish, Prem Rog, Vidhaata, Betaab, Hero, Sohni Mahiwal, Wanted, Hukumat, Daata, Tahalka, Chamatkar, and Gardish – kept him in the limelight until his final role in the 2011 film Rockstar, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri. He passed away in 2011 at age 79 after battling chronic kidney failure.
In the meantime, Jackie Shroff is gearing up for his next big project, the comedy‑drama Welcome To The Jungle, directed by Ahmed Khan. The ensemble cast includes big names such as Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Disha Patani, Lara Dutta, Shreyas Talpade, Johnny Lever, and many more.
Shammi Kapoor’s legacy lives on in every beat of Bollywood, and his fans can still relive his charismatic performances, proving that the “Elvis of India” remains a living legend in their hearts.
